India launches satellite for South Asian countries

As part of its efforts to build goodwill in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region, the South Asia Satellite (GSAT-9), a geosynchronous communications and meteorology satellite was launched by India on 5th May, 2017. The satellite provides crucial information on tele-medicine, tele-education, banking and television KU-band broadcasting opportunities to India’s neighbouring countries which include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during 2014 SAARC summit in Kathmandu, had made the commitment to launch the satellite.
